Lake County volunteers offer heavenly response

PENSACOLA (FBC)—Mere mortals arrived on Buddy Street Sept. 21 to help the southwest Pensacola neighborhood recover from the damage caused by Hurricane Ivan. But to Elizabeth Carroll, “the Lord sent in His angels.”

PENSACOLA (FBC)—Bob Greene walked along the same paths he did as a teenager last week, crossed sidewalks where he had played and looked on the church where he was called to preach as a high school senior. So much of his life—and heart—is wrapped up in the water-framed city on the hill by the bay. “It takes your breath away to see the destruction and breaks my heart to see the grief of our people,” he said.

JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—The Georgia Baptist feeding unit arrived at Gulf Breeze Elementary School on Tuesday morning Sept. 21 and immediately began serving as many as 4,000 meals a day—many to persons who walked up and stood in line.

Oklahoma volunteers bring hope to Olive community

PENSACOLA (FBC)—Merle Pershall was working the feeding line at Olive Baptist Church like a stand-up comedian working a crowd, dishing out bottled water from a huge steel bowl, taking snack treats to the boys and girls standing in the hot sun, offering wide smiles to parents and words of encouragement to seniors. His routine almost took away the sting at having to stand in the heat of the noon day for nearly an hour to get a hot meal.

PENSACOLA (FBC)—Forty-eight hours after the winds died down following the Sept. 15 landfall of Hurricane Ivan, Southern Baptist relief workers from Oklahoma were feeding hundreds their first full meal at Pensacola’s Olive Baptist Church.
