Florida Baptists asked to pray for 110 college students
By BARBARA DENMAN
JACKSONVILLE —This summer 110 Florida Baptist college students will spend their vacations serving in ways to advance God’s Kingdom when they travel to 17 countries and throughout the state of Florida as student summer missionaries.
The students are enlisted and equipped for long and short-term mission trips through Baptist Campus Ministries, which challenges them to explore avenues for sharing the Gospel. As a result of the experiences, many of them will hear God calling them into full-time Christian ministry and as overseas missionaries.
Of the 110 students, 66 will serve in 17 countries, including Australia, Panama, Germany, Belize, Madagascar, Haiti, and Brazil. Twenty-two are assigned to Central Asia, the largest group ever to represent Florida Baptists in this area. Among ministries they will be involved in is sports outreach and collegiate ministry on a major college campus.
Thirty-three students will serve in Florida doing resort ministry in Orlando, community ministry in Bradenton, prison ministry in Wewahitchka, and church planting in Milton and Indian Rocks Beach.
Some students will work alongside First Baptist Church in Orlando, First Baptist Church in Mossy Head, First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks, and Hillcrest Baptist Church in Pensacola.
Students at First Orlando will work Camp Orlando, Anthem, and Summer Bash youth ministry events. They will assist in the development of the worship team and conduct evangelism and discipleship projects.
Working with multiple cultures and diverse religious groups, students at First Indian Rocks will lead life groups for high school students transitioning into college/young adult ministry; and evangelize and disciple through community outreaches.
In Mossy Head, students will experience life on a rural mission field where thousands of people live, but churches are few. They will teach chronological Bible lessons in a day camp for unchurched school age children, focusing on evangelism and discipleship.
Ten of the summer missionaries will lead vacation Bible Schools for Florida Baptist churches in Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Panama City, Pensacola and West Palm Beach that have not been held the event in previous years. These students will equip church members to develop future vacation Bible Schools on their own.
Funding for Florida students comes primarily from their participation in BCM fundraising efforts, proceeds from the Florida Baptist Convention’s Maguire State Mission Offering, and scholarships from the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board or International Mission Board.
All Florida Baptists are encouraged to pray for the summer missionaries listed, along with their schools and places of service. Many of them are shown in the photo above, but not identified for security reasons.
