100 Homes Built in Haiti since October
—The Florida Baptist Convention plans to build 3,000 and possible 6,000 homes in Haiti for the nation’s homeless families. Haiti Rebuild is a partnership between Florida Baptists, SBC Disaster Relief, Baptist Global Response and the International Mission Board. Each home, designed to be built by Haitian hands, will cost $2,500. If you would like to contribute to build a home for a Haitian Family, click on “Make a Donation Now” above this photo.
 

Jan. 12, 2011—A year after the Quake, Florida and Southern Baptists are changing Haiti, one life at a time

CROIX-DES-BOUQUETS—Antonine Toussaint lived with her young children in a makeshift tent composed of tarp and scrap metal for 10 months after the Jan. 12 earthquake devastated Haiti.

With a new baby on the way, the young mother tried desperately to care for her children in an unsafe area of Croix-des-Bouquets, located east of Port-au-Prince. Surrounded by crime, poverty and unsanitary living conditions, every day was a struggle for Toussaint to keep her youngsters fed and protected. read more…

Dec. 10, 2010—DR volunteers leave Haiti due to unrest and violence

 
JACKSONVILLE (FBC)—Facing three days of escalating civil unrest and a continuing cholera outbreak in HaitiFlorida and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief workers are trying to get out of the troubled country.

 

Eddie Blackmon, rebuild coordinator for Florida and Southern Baptist disaster relief and other volunteers have been holed up at the Florida Mission House since rioting began Dec. 7. Florida Baptists have had personnel stationed in Haiti since the Jan. 12 earthquake. read more…


Nov. 23, 2010—Cholera outbreak intensifies in Haiti after Hurricane Tomas leaves standing water; Meanwhile convention increases efforts to get water purification kits to churches

PORT-AU-PRINCE (FBC)—Two weeks after Hurricane Tomas skirted western Haiti causing massive rainfall and extensive flooding, disaster weary Haitians are now coping with an increased spread of cholera worsened by bacteria-filled standing water.

 

Incidents of cholera have spiked in Haiti in the past days, causing Florida Baptist Convention officials to step up their response to the looming epidemic, said Dennis Wilbanks, associate in state’s Partnership Missions Department, who traveled to the country Nov. 10-17. read more…

PORT-AU-PRINCE (FBC)—An embattled Haiti is bracing for Tropical Storm Tomasexpected to strengthen into hurricane force winds before its projected hit Friday, Nov. 5—even as the Caribbean nation realizes its worst fears.

In the ten months since the Jan. 12 earthquake, Haitians have lived in fear of two potential threatsdisease and hurricanesas more than 1.3 million homeless live in unsanitary and unstable tent cities. read more…


Nov. 3, 2010—Nine months after quake, Haiti relief work brings gains; turns corner from rescue to rebuild

 

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (FBC)—Walking up to a one-room cement block house on the outskirts of Croix des Bouquet, Tommy Green “oohed” and “aahed” over a snuggly wrapped newborn of a young Haitian.

 

It was a scorching hot day in October and Green had gone to visit one of the first families to move into a home recently constructed by Haitian laborers under the direction of the Florida Baptist Convention’s rebuilding effort in Haiti. read more…


Nov. 2, 2010—Florida Baptists respond to cholera-stricken St. Marc—Volunteers urged to keep scheduled plans

 

PORT-AU-PRINCE (FBC)—As the death toll from Haiti's cholera outbreak climbs to nearly 300, Florida Baptist relief workers are shipping bottled water and water purification filters to St. Marc, the hardest hit city, in response to pleas from the area director of missions.

 

Fritz Albert, director of missions for the Artibonne Baptist Association in St. Marc, contacted Eddie Blackmon, North American Mission Board coordinator for the Haiti rebuild effort, with pleas of help. read more…
