Great Commission church opens doors to second generation Hispanics

Danny Egipciaco walked the streets of Hialeah and saw more than palm trees, tropical flowers and sunset-colored stucco buildings. He saw souls of second generation Hispanics who have never committed their lives to Jesus Christ.

Compelled by the spiritual lostness in this urban Dade County community, Egipciaco planted Relevant Church to reach the group of young adults who live life in the midst of colliding cultures.

Brought up in the Spanish-speaking traditions of their parents, second generation Hispanics have embraced the language and lifestyle of their English-speaking educational system and South Florida society.

To reach this segment of what Egipciaco calls an “unreached people group,” he has customized the congregation’s ministries to the unique preferences of this blended cultural group.

“I understand this culture,” said the bilingual Egipciaco, who himself grew up in Hialeah attending public schools. “I understand their struggles and what they are going through. I know their needs.” more…

Great Commission church on mission for God

Sitting in the bank president’s office, waiting for paperwork to be completed on the sale of a trailer, the Southern Baptist layperson engaged the young couple sitting beside him in conversation. Al Guettler, member of First Baptist Church, Chipley, carefully steered the conversation toward spiritual matters.

Before Guettler said goodbye to his new young friends, they were kneeling in the bank parking lot, praying to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

A Christian for 11 years, Guettler awakens each morning, asking God for opportunities to share his faith and for courage to do so. He recalls with a smile the first time he attempted to share his faith. He was participating in visitation with his church. “I got turned completely upside down and backwards” in the gospel presentation, he said, so “I just shared what the Lord had done for me.” To his surprise, the person prayed to receive Christ. Since then, there has been no turning back for Guettler.

“Once a person puts aside the fear and anxiety and ‘tastes’ the Great Commission, that person will never be able to turn back,” he remarked.

Being a “Great Commission Christian” seems to come naturally if you’re a member of a “Great Commission church,” according to the evangelistic Sunday School teacher. more…
