DR and construction teams to reroof Blue Spring’s Youth Camp Chapel

MARIANNA (FBC)—A statewide call is being issued for Florida Baptist disaster relief and church construction teams to participate in a “hands-on” training project at Blue Springs Baptist Conference Center in Marianna.

The groups will be asked to reroof the conference center’s Youth Camp Chapel during the week-long project, slated for Monday, Oct. 19, until Saturday, Oct. 24. Disaster relief clean-up teams, church construction teams or interested individuals can volunteer for all or part of the week.

The project is a “win-win” for everyone, said Fritz Wilson, director of the Disaster Relief and Recovery Department at the Florida Baptist Convention.

“Volunteers will get “hands on” experience in learning how to install a roof according to the very strict Florida roofing codes,” he explained. And the conference center and future youth camps will benefit from a worship facility with a new roof.

The project will also help Florida’s disaster relief effort by developing “a pool of trained volunteers that can install roofs after disasters, such as the series of 2004 hurricanes when we helped reroof over 2,000 homes across the state,” Wilson added.

The project provides an opportunity for disaster relief, handyman ministry and church construction volunteers “to learn how to install a roof according to the new Florida roofing codes,” while ministering to others through providing Blue Springs Conference with a new roof on their youth camp chapel, Wilson said.

Materials to reroof the 8,500 sq. ft. building will be provided, as well as housing and meals while at Blue Springs. Details on Florida’s roofing codes and compliance requirements related to roofing churches and homes will be offered in evening sessions.

“These types of projects help train volunteers in the very strict Florida roof codes, especially in times when we don’t have a lot of storms,” added Wilson.

Interested volunteers are asked to pre-register by email: disaster@flbaptist.org or by phone: Disaster Relief and Recovery Department, 800-226-8584, ext. 3121. Please provide name, phone number, and dates willing to work.
